Japanese Black Pine
Growing wild in Japan, the black pine is able to survive on poor, stony soil. Pines are the most favourite plants for bonsai growers. The black pine being one of the most sought after are not easily come across these days.
These trees have rugged bark giving them a very mature appearance.
Position
Full sun and protect from frost and cold winds.
Watering
Check daily. Water only if soil is drying out. Water very sparingly in winter.
Feeding
Feed every three to four weeks from spring to early winter.
Pruning
As needles appear, pinch back overgrown shoots. In the growing season remove long main shoots; trim one third to half of new candles on smaller shoots. Prune branch tips every other year. In late summer remove old needles and crowded twigs to let in light.
